The GACMF (German American Country Music Federation) Award show is the equilivent to the CMA's or Country Music Awards in the United States. They hold a yearly show to give awards to country artists in Germany. The actual show itself is taped and then aired on national television at a later date. There were over 2500 people in attendance in the audience. After the show there is a huge party.
Artists such as Mark Chesnutt, Silverwood, Slow Horses and others performed that evening.
My first song of the evening was "Thank God I'm A Country Boy". It started off with me descending the grand staircase at the center of the set. The audience was into the song from the first beats with a steady clap!
Roy on Stage
The last award of the evening was given to John Denver, my greatest musical hero, who was inducted into the German Country Music Hall of Fame. It was my honor to accept the award on his behalf and that of his family. Roy presented the award to John's mother and brother in October of 2007. You can view several photos of that presentation here.
Fletcher M. Burton
Consul General of The United States of America Leipzig, Germany presenting the award to Roy on behalf of John Denver.
Immediatly after accepting the award for John and saying a few words of grattitude, I was handed my guitar. I then sang "Take Me Home Country Roads", to a standing ovation. It was an unbelievable and touching moment.
