Rocky Mountain High

Words & Music By: John Denver
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Coming home to a place he’d never been before
He left yesterday behind him
You might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door
When he first came to the mountains

His life was far away, on the road
And hanging by a song
But the strings already broken
And he doesn’t really care
It keeps changing fast, and it don’t last for long

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky
The shadows from the starlight
Are softer than a lullaby
Rocky Mountain high
Rocky Mountain high

He climbed cathedral mountains
He saw silver clouds below
He saw everything as far as you can see
And they say that he got crazy once
And he tried to touch the sun,
And he lost a friend, but kept his memory
Now he walks in quiet solitude
The forest and the streams
Seeking grace in every step he takes
His sight is turned inside himself
To try and understand
The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky
You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply
Rocky Mountain high
Rocky Mountain high.

Now his life is full of wonder
But his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing he can not comprehend
Why they try to tear the mountains down
To bring in a couple more
More people, more scars upon the land

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky
I know he’d be a poor man
If he never saw an eagle fly
Rocky Mountain high
It's a Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky
Friends around the campfire and everybody’s high
Rocky Mountain high
Rocky Mountain high
Rocky Mountain high
Rocky Mountain high

What Our Love Is Not About

Words & Music By: Roy Rivers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Lying here... in our bed
Those words keep playing in my head
Those words that made you cry
What a fool am I

It started out... as just a joke
Then I knew... the words that I had spoke
Already broke your heart

CHORUS:
We’re not sleeping... not speaking
Not feeling what lovers should be feeling
Not opening up... and pouring it out
This is what our love is not about

Seems like... now and then
I’ll speak before my brain kicks in
I get caught up in... my pride
With no place to hide

The last thing... I’d ever want
Is to hurt you... darling, I would not
I just hate this spot we’re in

(CHORUS)

And not matter how hard I try
The words just don’t come out right
And the next thing I know... something’s said
And instead of us working out
Or trying to talk it out
We turn back to back in our bed

(CHORUS)

This is what our love... is not... about

Back Home Again

Words & Music By: John Denver
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

There’s a storm across the valley
Clouds are rolling in
The afternoon is heavy on your shoulders
There’s a truck out on the four lane
A mile or more away
The whining of his wheels just makes it colder

He’s an hour away from riding
On your prayers up in the sky
Ten days on the road, and barely gone
There’s a fire softly burning
Supper’s on the stove
It’s the light in your eyes that makes him warm

Hey, it’s good to be back home again
Sometimes this old farm
Feels like a long lost friend
Yes, and hey, it’s good to be back home again

There’s all the news to tell him
How’d you spend your time
And what’s the latest thing the neighbors say?
And your mother called last Friday
“Sunshine” made her cry
And you felt the baby move just yesterday

Hey, it’s good to be back home again
Sometimes this old farm
Feels like a long lost friend
Yes, and hey it’s good to be back home again

Oh, the time that I can lay this tired old body down
And feel your fingers, feather soft upon me
The kisses that I live for, the love that lights my way
The happiness that living with you brings me

It’s the sweetest thing I know of
Just spending time with you
It’s the little things that make a house a home
Like a fire softly burning and supper on the stove
And the light in your eyes that makes me warm

Hey, it’s good to be back home again
Sometimes this old farm
Feels like a long lost friend
Yes, and hey it’s good to be back home again

Hey, it’s good to be back home again
Sometimes this old farm
Feels like a long lost friend
And hey, it’s good to be back home again
I said hey, it’s good to be back home again

Thank God, I'm A Country Boy

Words & Music By: John Sommers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Well, life’s on a farm is kinda laid back
Ain’t much an old country boy like me can’t hack
It’s early to rise, early in the sack
Thank God I’m a country boy

Well, a simple kind of life never did me no harm
A raising me a family and working on the farm
My days are all filled with an easy country charm
Thank God I’m a country boy

Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun’s coming up, I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain’t nothing but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I’m a country boy

When the work’s all done and the sun’s setting low
I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow
The kids are all asleep so I keep it kinda low
Thank God I’m a country boy

I’d play Sally Goodin all day if I could
But the lord and my wife wouldn’t take it very  good
So I fiddle when I can and I work when I should
Thank God I’m a country boy

Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun’s coming up, I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain’t nothing but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I’m a country boy

Well, I wouldn’t trade my life for diamonds or jewels
I never was one of them money hungry fools
I’d rather have my fiddle and my farming tools
Thank God I’m a country boy

Yeah, city folk driving in a black limousine
A lotta sad people thinking that’s-a mighty keen
Son, let me tell you now exactly what I mean
Thank God I’m a country boy

Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun’s coming up, I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain’t nothing but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I’m a country boy

Well, my fiddle was my daddy’s till the day he died
And he took me by the hand and held me close to his side
He said, “Live a good life and play my fiddle with pride
And thank God you’re a country boy

My Daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle
He taught me how to work and play a tune on the fiddle
He taught me how to love and how to give just a little
Thank God I’m a country boy

Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun’s coming up, I got cakes on the griddle
And life ain’t nothing but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I’m a country boy

Sunshine On My Shoulders

Words & Music By: John Denver, Mike Taylor & Dick Kniss
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a day that I could give you
I’d give to you the day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I’d sing a song to make you feel this way

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a tale that I could tell you
I’d tell a tale sure to make you smile
If I had a wish that I could wish for you
I’d make a wish for sunshine for all the while

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

Sunshine almost all the time makes me high
Sunshine almost always…

Take Me Home, Country Roads

Words & Music By: Roy Rivers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains
Shenandoah River
Life is old there
Older than the trees
Younger than the mountains
Growin like a breeze

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gather round her
Miners lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine
Teardrops in my eye

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice
In the morning hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And driving down the road I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

Country Roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

Take me home, country roads
Take me home, down country roads

True Love Is...

Words & Music By: Roy Rivers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

True love is…
Surrender, to the feelings of our hearts
To long for one another's soft embrace
To never grow apart

The warmth of your caresses
The tenderness you show
The way you love me still today
In spite of everything you know

Some say love is just for show
It's easy come and easy go

Instrumental

True love is…
Believing, and facing who we are
To look beyond the darkness and the clouds
While reaching for the stars

The one and only answer
It's what I feel for you
An expression of the highest thoughts I know
And making love with you

An expression of the highest thoughts I know
And making love… with you.

Oh Railroad

Words & Music By: Roy Rivers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Well I'm sitting here waiting
On the train at the station
It arrives at a quarter of eight
Got my bags and I'm ready
Gonna visit my baby
And I hope that she's not late
I'm spending my time
Staring down at the line
That will take me away from here
Oh railroad, and I'm an engineer

Well it's station to station
Crossing all of the nation
It's the line and the weight on her back
And her hearts just a pounding
And her whistle is sounding
As she rumbles down the track
It's every day, pulling all of the way
Now she's ready to pull in here
Oh railroad, and I'm an engineer

Well, some say she's ready
And it's time to retire
Cause their profits are suffering
And they're stuck in the mire
She's caught up in wonder
From the stories they spin
And if you look on her back
She's even carrying them

It's the steel and the shaking
And the curves and the braking
And I smile as I take it all in
It's the feel of the power
Running hour by hour
And the spirit of all those men
There's something about
All the ins and the outs
And the power behind those wheels
Oh railroad, and I'm an engineer
Oh railroad, and I'm an engineer

My Sweet Lady

Words & Music By: Roy Rivers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Lady, are you crying?
Do the tears belong to me?
Did you think our time together was all gone?
Lady, you’ve been dreaming
I’m as close as I can be
And I swear to you our time has just begun

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind
I promise I will stay right here beside you
Today our lives were joined, became entwined
I wish that you could know how much I love you

Lady, are you happy?
Do you feel the way I do?
Are there meanings that you’ve never seen before?
Lady, my sweet lady
I just can’t believe it’s true
And it’s like I’ve never ever loved before

Close your eyes and rest your weary mind
I promise I will stay right here beside you
Today our lives were joined, became entwined
I wish that you could know how much I love you

Lady, are you crying?
Do the tears belong to me?
Did you think our time together was all gone?
Lady, you’ve been dreaming
I’m as close as I can be
And I swear to you our time has just begun.

All Caught Up

Words & Music By: Roy Rivers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Well I’m all caught up in a lonesome dream
I’m feeling the pain that a lonely heart brings
Where’s my head over heels?
My apart at the seams?
Yes I’m all caught up…

Met a little girl just the other day
Gazing to the sky at the Milky Way
Spent a little time just a taking her in
Then I had to put an end to all my wondering
I said, “Why is a pretty little thing like you, here
Sitting in the evening dew?
Don’t you have a good man to hold your hand?”

I could get all caught up, she’s a dreamers dream
I’m beginning to feel my heart skipping beats
I could go head over heels And fall apart at my seams
Yes I’m all caught up…

One to another we said a few things
We talked about the stars and each others dreams
On till the morning and the light of day
Not a thought about the time as it slipped away
I said “Would you consider that a man like me
Might fit into your plans someday
She gave a little "I'm yours" grin…
Then she took my hand (woo hoo!)

Well I’m all caught up in a lover’s dream
I can feel all the joy in my heart as it sings
Yes, I’m head over heels - I’m apart at my seams
And I’m all caught up…
And I’m all caught up…
Yes I’m all caught up…

Dreaming My Way Home

Words & Music By: Roy Rivers
LYRICS/CHORD SHEET | CHORDIE FILE

Oh the wind, it blows so cold here
On this mountainside
But still it feels like paradise,
As I gaze across the sky
Cause heaven is in the sky
And the earth provides my home
And the wind helps me reach
The highest heights I've flown
It's like I'm dreaming my way home

Well, I get this sense when I'm dreaming
Like something’s gone before
And I find myself a flying,
From my mountains to the shore
And I hear the distant songs,
And I'm singing right along
And the words tell of all
The dreams I've dreamed before
And I'm dreaming my way home

Oh the higher we fly together
The closer we'll be forever

(Instrumental)

You can see me in the morning,
At the breaking of the dawn
In the words you'll hear me singing
In the setting of the sun
And I can see you too
In your dreams I'll come to you
And our hearts will hold each other from now on
And I'm dreaming my way home
And I'm dreaming my way home
I'm dreaming my way… home

Hi Mom, It's Me

Well I listened to the radio
The other night in bed
I'd been singing on the road somewhere
And feeling about half dead
The announcer took a phone call
From a woman as she cried
She told of love and happiness
And how it up and died.

There was something in her story
And I guess it caught my ear
I imagined how it must have felt
To carry all those years
How a moments indiscretion
Had produced a little life
And a fifteen year old mother
Who was made to sacrifice.

There ensued a bitter battle
As her folks became enraged
They would let her bring him in the world
Until a couple came
Who would give the child the kind of life
That wouldn't need repair
But it broke the heart and spirit
Of this frightened little girl.

Well, she told of how she talked to him
And felt his kicking feet
And how she sang him lullabies
To put herself to sleep
And when he was delivered,
She was not supposed to see
But she caught a glimpse of a birthmark,
Like a heart, upon his knee.

Well at that very moment
Something shook me in my brain
Cause I had searched for many years
To learn my real mom's name
And I threw aside the covers
From my bed in that motel
And stared down at my knee
And the little heart I knew so well.

Well I called the station quickly
And I learned the lady's name
And I found that her address
Was in this town where I was playing
So I dressed myself and drove there,
I just had to go and see
And it was almost like I saw myself,
And I said -- Hi mom, it's me

There’s a truth within the story
Like a tune for every song
And you never know when happenstance
Will help you right along
And for some it's a beginning,
And for some it's in an end
And for some it's in the living
And the truth it has to lend.
